Maine – Headlights glow through mist and light flakes this morning in far northern Maine as cold air tightens its grip and winter steadies itself. The air feels sharp, and untreated surfaces can turn slick quickly before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, no immediate hazardous weather is expected today, but a developing winter system raises concerns later this weekend. Meteorologists note snow is possible Saturday night into Sunday, with a wintry mix of sleet or freezing rain also on the table.

Temperatures remain cold today, with highs near the low 30s and a brisk feel. Patchy freezing fog early and lingering moisture could create isolated slick spots, especially on bridges and secondary roads around Caribou, Presque Isle, and along Route 1.

Conditions turn more active Friday. Clouds thicken, and precipitation chances increase through the afternoon. Rain may mix with snow at times, though little accumulation is expected during the day. Winds pick up, and visibility could drop during heavier bursts.

Saturday offers a brief break with some sun and highs near the upper 30s. That pause sets the stage for the main event. By Saturday night, snow becomes more likely, especially after midnight. Latest guidance suggests northern Maine has the best chance of meaningful accumulation, with at least four inches possible by Sunday in spots.

Sunday stays cold and snowy at times, keeping roads snow-covered and slippery. Travel could be slow, particularly early Sunday and again after sunset when temperatures fall back into the teens and 20s. Crews may struggle to keep up if snow intensity increases.

Snow chances linger into early next week as winter settles in. Additional advisories or watches could be issued as confidence grows.
