Maine wakes under a muted gray sky as freezing fog clings to roads and treetops across the North Woods. Headlights glow softly through the haze, and pavement feels slick in spots. While conditions stay relatively quiet today, winter’s next move is already taking shape for the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, patchy freezing fog lingers this morning with temperatures holding near 29. Visibility may drop quickly on secondary roads, especially before mid-morning. Drivers should slow down and watch for icy patches on untreated surfaces.

Later today turns calmer. Highs reach the mid-30s with light winds, though a wintry mix develops late. Freezing rain and sleet are possible by late afternoon and evening, transitioning to light snow. Ice accumulation appears limited, but even a thin glaze can cause trouble on Route 1 and rural roads.

Saturday brings a brief break. Skies brighten at times, and highs climb near 37 with breezy northwest winds. Conditions deteriorate again Saturday night as snow redevelops after dark. Temperatures fall into the teens, setting the stage for accumulating snowfall.

Sunday is the main impact day. Snow becomes widespread, and confidence is increasing in at least 5 to 6 inches across portions of northern Maine, including Caribou and surrounding communities. Blowing snow may reduce visibility at times, especially in open areas. Travel could become difficult through the day and into Sunday night.

By Monday, snow tapers with colder air settling in. Highs stay near 25, and wind chills dip lower. Any untreated roads may remain snow-packed or icy into the morning commute.

Winter daylight is slowly increasing, but hazards remain front and center. Planning travel Sunday? Share what conditions look like where you are.
