Caribou, Maine – Rain is moving into Maine this evening, with thunderstorms expected to spark across central and northern parts of the state before midnight. By Wednesday morning, rain may transition into snow showers in elevated northern areas, including the western mountains and high terrain near Clayton Lake.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, rain will spread west to east overnight, tapering off early Wednesday in southern regions but lingering longer across northern and central counties. Thunderstorms remain possible tonight, particularly in areas around Millinocket, Houlton, and Greenville.
Rainfall amounts are expected to range from 0.2 to 0.8 inches across much of the state, with the highest totals near the Canadian border. Some light snow accumulation is possible Wednesday morning in higher terrain zones north of Baxter State Park. Roadways may be slick in those areas, especially during the early commute.
Residents are advised to avoid travel in poor visibility and prepare for rapidly changing conditions, especially in the north. While skies will clear along the coast by Wednesday afternoon, northern Maine will likely remain cloudy with intermittent showers.
Dry weather is expected to return statewide Thursday and Friday, though additional updates may be issued if snow intensifies overnight.
