Caribou, ME – Drivers across northern Maine could face icy roads by early Wednesday as a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain develops after a brief warmup, creating slick travel conditions during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, isolated snow showers will continue Sunday across areas north of the Katahdin region, followed by a short burst of light snow early Monday morning. Temperatures will then surge into the upper 40s and low 50s Monday afternoon before a colder system moves in late Tuesday night.

The greatest concern centers on Aroostook County, including Caribou, Presque Isle, and Fort Kent, where freezing rain could coat roads like U.S. Route 1 and sections of Interstate 95 with a thin layer of ice. Even minor ice accumulation can create hazardous driving, especially on bridges and untreated rural roads.

Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions by Tuesday night, limiting overnight travel and checking road conditions before heading out early Wednesday. Keep devices charged and allow extra commute time as crews may struggle to keep up with icing.

The unsettled pattern may continue with additional snow potential later in the week, and further advisories could be issued as the midweek system approaches.
