Caribou, Maine – Wet roads across northern Maine could quickly turn slick this evening as temperatures drop below freezing and rain changes to snow.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, light rain will continue through the evening before transitioning to snow overnight across northern and central areas including Caribou, Presque Isle, and Houlton. As temperatures fall into the teens and 20s by early Friday morning, untreated roads may freeze, creating hazardous travel conditions.

Snow accumulation will remain light, generally a coating, with snow tapering off by daybreak Friday. However, the combination of lingering moisture and falling temperatures increases the risk of black ice, especially on secondary roads and bridges.

Patchy fog may also develop overnight, reducing visibility in some areas. Travel along Route 1 and I-95 could become slick before sunrise.

Looking ahead, another round of rain and snow is possible Monday, with a more complex mix of precipitation expected by midweek across northern and eastern Maine.

Drivers are urged to use caution overnight and during the early Friday commute as conditions may change rapidly.
