CARIBOU, Maine – Fog rolls low across the northern fields this Wednesday morning, clinging to wet roads and quiet barns as a steady rain moves through Aroostook County. The damp pattern signals another shift in northern Maine’s fall weather, with cooler air expected to settle in by the end of the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, rain will continue through much of the morning, tapering to light showers by midday. Southeast winds will pick up, reaching 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 20, making the day feel raw and unsettled. Travel across rural routes and stretches of U.S. 1 could be slowed by reduced visibility from fog and mist.

Thursday remains unsettled but drier, with only scattered showers and highs in the mid-50s. Skies begin to clear late in the day as a weak ridge of high pressure moves in from Quebec. The payoff arrives Friday — mostly sunny skies and crisp fall air return, with highs in the low 50s and lows dipping into the 30s. By Saturday morning, sheltered valleys north of Presque Isle could see the first patchy frost of the season.

The weekend stays cool and bright, perfect for leaf-peeping or final harvest work before colder air sets in next week. Highs will hover near 50°F Saturday and Sunday, with a slight chance of showers returning late Sunday as another front approaches.

For now, northern Maine’s weather is poised between seasons — wet fields, clearer skies ahead, and that unmistakable first hint of winter on the breeze.
