CARIBOU, Maine – Temperatures will dip into the 30s tonight across northern Maine’s valleys, bringing the risk of patchy frost from Allagash to St. Francis and into the Aroostook River basin, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou. Locations such as Oxbow, Masardis, and Presque Isle could see frost forming in colder pockets, while much of the state holds in the 40s to near 50 degrees.

Clear skies and calm winds are driving the sharp cool-down, though forecasters expect mainly dry conditions through midweek. Some scattered showers are possible from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, but precipitation is expected to remain light.

The bigger concern arrives late week as Hurricane Erin passes well southeast of the Gulf of Maine. While the storm will remain offshore, its long-period swells will generate hazardous surf along the Downeast coast starting Thursday and peaking Friday. The weather service warns of dangerous rip currents lasting into Saturday, urging beachgoers to use caution and avoid swimming in unguarded areas.

Residents in northern valleys should protect sensitive plants from frost damage tonight, while those along the coast should prepare for rough surf heading into the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
