Maine roads across Aroostook County are turning slick this morning as snow and sleet begin spreading across northern communities. Wind pushes light snow across fields and highways, while temperatures remain locked in the 20s.

A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for Caribou and much of northern Aroostook County, where a messy mix of snow, sleet, and ice is expected to continue through early Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, 2 to 5 inches of total snow could fall across the region. On top of that, 1 to 2 inches of sleet may accumulate as the storm changes phases during the day.

Later this evening, precipitation may transition into freezing rain, adding up to 0.10 to 0.25 inches of ice in some areas.

That combination could make travel extremely hazardous across northern Maine.

Drivers along U.S. Route 1, Route 89, and Route 161 should expect snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and difficult travel conditions. Plows may struggle to keep up as sleet compacts onto roadways.

Plan extra travel time if you must drive today. Conditions may deteriorate quickly once sleet and freezing rain develop.

Temperatures stay cold with daytime highs near 25°F, while strong winds could gust near 22 mph, making the air feel even colder.

By Thursday afternoon, precipitation gradually shifts toward rain before tapering off. Temperatures briefly rise toward 37°F, helping improve road conditions later in the day.

Calmer weather returns Friday with sunshine and highs near 31°F, though another round of snow may arrive Friday night into Saturday.

Northern Maine remains firmly in winter mode even as spring approaches later this month.
