Maine – Windshields glaze and sidewalks shine early this morning as a messy winter system grips southern Maine and nearby New Hampshire. Light freezing rain and sleet coat untreated surfaces, creating hazardous travel as the final full week of 2025 begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early evening. Mixed precipitation continues today, with up to one inch of snow possible, sleet around a tenth of an inch, and ice accumulations approaching four tenths in spots. Road conditions may deteriorate quickly during heavier bursts.

Around Portland and coastal York and Cumberland counties, temperatures hover near freezing through much of the morning. Light freezing rain and fog reduce visibility, especially on secondary roads. Drivers along I-95, Route 1, and local connectors should slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Side streets and bridges remain the most dangerous.

Farther inland toward Manchester, New Hampshire, a wintry mix continues into midday before changing to rain. Even brief warming may not erase the risk. Meltwater can refreeze later, creating a flash-freeze concern after sunset as colder air pours in behind the system.

By tonight, skies begin to clear, but winter tightens its grip. Temperatures plunge into the teens and single digits north, locking in any leftover moisture. Tuesday turns cold and breezy, with wind chills biting during morning travel.

Midweek stays cold as New Year’s Eve approaches. A small chance of snow returns Wednesday night, keeping travelers alert ahead of New Year’s Day 2026. The holiday itself looks brighter but sharply cold, with sunshine reflecting off snowpack and icy patches lingering.
