Maine starts Monday under bitter cold and quiet skies, but conditions deteriorate fast across the far north. Snow begins filling the air by mid-morning, quickly mixing with sleet and freezing rain as a powerful winter system presses into Aroostook County.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through early Tuesday morning. Northeast and Northwest Aroostook counties can expect a messy combination of snow, sleet, and ice. Snow and sleet totals reach 2 to 4 inches, while ice accumulations climb up to two-tenths of an inch.

Roads, bridges, and overpasses turn slick quickly through the afternoon and evening. Winds pick up as precipitation intensifies, increasing the risk for downed tree limbs and scattered power outages. Officials warn that travel becomes hazardous, especially during the Monday evening commute and late-night hours.

In Caribou, temperatures hover near freezing during the day, allowing ice to cling to untreated surfaces. Even minor melting may refreeze quickly after dark as colder air deepens. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel. Pedestrians should expect icy sidewalks and steps.

Behind the storm, colder and quieter weather settles in Tuesday. Light snow showers linger, but temperatures struggle to reach the lower 20s. Wind chills dip below zero at times, reinforcing the deep winter feel.

Midweek brings calmer conditions for New Year’s Eve, though it stays cold. A few snow showers are possible Wednesday night into New Year’s Day 2026, keeping winter firmly in control during holiday travel.

This storm marks another reminder that winter driving skills are essential this week. Plan extra time, prepare emergency kits, and stay weather-aware as northern Maine closes out 2025.
