Maine – Light snow drifts across rooftops and headlights glow through mist this MLK Day, a clear signal that winter travel conditions are already in play. Roads look merely wet at first glance, but untreated surfaces quickly turn slick as snow compacts and temperatures hover below freezing across southern Maine and southern New Hampshire.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until early afternoon. Snow totals generally range from 3 to 5 inches, enough to coat roads and reduce traction. Even lighter snowfall is causing travel slowdowns, especially on secondary roads, bridges, and ramps near Portland, Saco, and inland York County. Conditions extend into central and southern New Hampshire, including Manchester and surrounding communities.

Snow tapers later today, but cold air settles in behind the system. Temperatures drop into the teens tonight, locking in icy spots where snow partially melts during the day. That refreeze threat keeps the commute tricky again early Tuesday. Crews continue treating major routes, though drivers should still expect slippery stretches along I-95, I-293, and local connectors.

To be fair, midweek offers a brief break. Sunshine returns Tuesday and Wednesday, though highs remain in the 20s. By late week, temperatures rebound slightly, but another colder push looms into the weekend. Meteorologists are monitoring signals for additional snow chances as cold air remains entrenched across New England.

Looking longer range, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook favors below-normal temperatures across the Northeast, keeping winter firmly in control. Additional advisories are possible as the pattern evolves.
