Caribou, ME – A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will make roads hazardous across much of northern and eastern Maine through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Aroostook, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, and Washington counties from Sunday evening through 9 a.m. Monday. Forecasters expect up to 2 inches of snow and sleet in some northern areas, including Caribou, Fort Kent and Presque Isle, with ice accumulations between one-tenth and one-quarter inch.
Further south, cities such as Bangor, Lincoln, Calais and Eastport could see lower snow totals, but ice remains a key concern. The icy mix is likely to make morning travel treacherous, especially on untreated surfaces and secondary roads.
Authorities urge drivers to allow extra travel time and reduce speed. Slippery roads and limited visibility are expected to impact the Monday morning commute, especially in areas of higher elevation and open stretches prone to freezing.
Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions at newengland511.org before heading out. The storm system is expected to clear by late Monday morning, giving way to more seasonable conditions by the afternoon.
