Caribou, ME – Maine residents are facing gusty winds and hazardous surf conditions today as high pressure builds across New England, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Caribou.

Forecasters report that a pressure gradient between shortwave and high-pressure systems is producing strong winds through northern and eastern Maine. Coastal Downeast areas are under a high surf advisory, with elevated sea heights and rip current risks expected through Thursday.

According to the NWS, skies will clear overnight as winds diminish, but colder air will take hold. Lows are forecast to dip into the upper 20s to low 30s in northern Maine and the mid-to-upper 30s in Downeast regions. This may bring frost conditions to northern and central Maine. While the growing season has ended across much of the state, a frost advisory has been issued for southern Penobscot County, where crops remain at risk.

Meteorologists note that hurricanes Humberto and Imelda continue moving eastward into the Atlantic, far to Maine’s south, but are contributing to elevated seas along the coastline.

Residents are advised to take precautions along the shore, especially near rip-prone beaches, and to prepare for cold overnight temperatures. The next chance of rain is not expected until early next week.
