Caribou, Maine – Bitter Arctic air is surging into Maine, bringing the risk of sudden snow squalls and dangerously cold wind chills that could make travel hazardous across much of the state through the weekend. Drivers in northern and eastern sections could see visibility drop quickly this afternoon as brief but intense snow showers move through, followed by a sharp plunge in temperatures tonight.

According to the National Weather Service office in Caribou, the best chance for snow squalls develops this afternoon from the central highlands east into east-central Maine. Gusty winds combined with falling temperatures will drive wind chills well below zero by evening, with the cold intensifying overnight and into Saturday morning. Wind chill warnings are in effect for much of central and northern Maine, while a cold weather advisory covers southern areas late tonight into Saturday.

Wind chills early Saturday could approach 30 to 40 degrees below zero in parts of Aroostook County, including areas near Fort Kent, Estcourt Station, and the St. John Valley. Farther south, Bangor and Downeast communities are still expected to see wind chills well below zero, with slick roads possible where snow squalls pass through.

Forecasters say another round of snow is likely Sunday night into Monday, potentially bringing accumulating snow even along the coast. Bitter cold and strong winds remain the primary concern through the weekend, and additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
