Caribou, Maine – A slow-moving storm is creating hazardous travel conditions across Maine today, with light snow falling across northern and central areas while Downeast communities contend with freezing rain and slick roads through the day and into the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, northern and central Maine will see periods of light snow, while areas farther south, including the Bangor region and the immediate coast, experience a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain. The greatest icing concern is focused on central Hancock and Washington counties, where cold ground temperatures could allow ice to build even when precipitation appears light.

Freezing rain along the immediate coast is expected to transition to plain rain early this morning, but just inland, colder air may allow icing to persist through early afternoon. Even small ice accumulations could make untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots slippery, especially during peak travel times.

Across Aroostook County and interior sections of the state, light snow may lead to minor accumulations and reduced visibility at times, though impacts are expected to be limited compared to the icing threat farther south. Drivers statewide are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution on bridges and secondary roads.

Icy conditions may linger into the evening hours before temperatures gradually improve. Additional updates or advisories could be issued as conditions evolve, and residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts through tonight.
