Bangor, Maine – Slippery roads could develop quickly Thursday evening as a wintry mix spreads across Maine, creating hazardous overnight travel into the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, precipitation will begin Thursday evening as snow and sleet across the Central Highlands and northern Maine, while Bangor and Downeast areas are expected to see sleet and freezing rain from the start. Ice accumulation is likely overnight, especially in interior regions where temperatures hover near freezing.
Roads including I-95, Route 1, and Route 9 could become slick late Thursday night into early Friday, with the highest ice totals expected toward the Moosehead region. In northern areas such as Presque Isle and Caribou, snow and sleet may transition to freezing rain before gradually changing over.
By Friday morning, conditions are expected to improve across southern Maine as temperatures rise and precipitation changes to rain, while northern areas may remain icy until midday.
Another round of mixed precipitation is possible this weekend, extending the stretch of unsettled weather.
Drivers are urged to slow down, avoid unnecessary overnight travel, and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions through Friday morning.
