Caribou, ME – Freezing fog is expected across Maine tonight, creating hazardous travel conditions as temperatures drop below freezing. Motorists should remain cautious, especially on untreated roads and bridges, where icy patches may develop overnight.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), patchy freezing fog is likely to form late Wednesday evening and persist into Thursday morning. Visibility may be significantly reduced in some areas, posing risks for late-night and early-morning travelers. Highways like Route 1 are particularly vulnerable to slippery conditions during these hours.
For Thursday, skies will clear, offering sunnier conditions, though temperatures will remain cold, with highs near 26°F and wind chills as low as -2°F. Another round of freezing fog may develop Thursday night, prompting further concerns for slippery conditions.
Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday will bring mostly sunny skies and slightly warmer highs, ranging from 26°F to 30°F. By Sunday, clouds return, along with a slight chance of snow or rain, particularly during the evening hours.
Holiday travelers are urged to monitor weather updates and allow extra time when driving, especially during overnight hours when visibility is limited. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, water, and a flashlight, in case of unexpected delays.
