Caribou, Maine – Northern Maine is bracing for its first freeze of the season this weekend as cold air surges in from Canada, bringing frost Friday night and a likely hard freeze Saturday night across central and northern valleys.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a cold front will move through late Thursday, dropping temperatures into the 30s and 40s by Friday morning. While most of the state will stay dry, drought conditions will persist for already parched regions in Aroostook County.
Winds will turn northwesterly and gust up to 25 mph Friday afternoon, creating elevated fire weather risks. Officials warn that similar conditions are expected Saturday, urging residents to check with local fire departments, wardens, or forest rangers before conducting any open burning.
The coldest temperatures are forecast Saturday night, with widespread frost and freezing conditions possible from Presque Isle to Fort Kent. Residents should protect sensitive plants, and outdoor workers are advised to prepare for early-season chill.
More advisories may be issued if fire danger or freeze conditions worsen through the weekend.
