Portland, Maine – Flash flooding could disrupt parts of Maine on Saturday as an upper-level low pushes locally heavy thunderstorms over already saturated soils. The National Weather Service warns that downpours could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and flood low-lying roads.

According to the Weather Prediction Center, a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall covers most of southern and central Maine through Saturday night. The heaviest rain is expected in the afternoon and evening, with up to two inches possible in isolated storms.

Cities including Portland, Lewiston, and Augusta may see rapid runoff, especially in urban areas. Rural roads near the Androscoggin and Kennebec rivers could become impassable if rainfall rates intensify. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and heed barricades.

Residents should clear storm drains and secure outdoor belongings. With the ground still wet from recent rains, flash flooding may develop faster than usual.

The flood threat is expected to ease by early Sunday, but additional rounds of rain are possible next week.
