CARIBOU, Maine — Northern Maine’s stretch of damp, chilly weather is setting the stage for a frosty fall weekend. After steady rain Thursday, a sharp north wind will usher in cooler air and the potential for patchy frost by early Saturday across Aroostook County.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, Thursday brings continued showers with gusts up to 25 mph as temperatures hold near the upper 40s. Travelers along Route 1 and U.S. 1A should watch for slick conditions through midday as light rain tapers to drizzle. Rain amounts will stay low, but wet leaves could make rural roads slippery.

By Friday, skies begin to clear and winds ease, allowing temperatures to drop sharply under calm conditions Friday night. Lows in the mid-30s could produce frost across open fields and low-lying areas from Caribou to Presque Isle. Gardeners are urged to cover late-season plants and move sensitive flowers or herbs indoors.

Saturday looks crisp and sunny with highs around 58°F and bright blue skies — classic northern Maine autumn weather. Sunday continues the trend with light winds, sunshine, and afternoon highs near 61°F.

Next week brings a slow rebound, but another round of rain is possible by Monday night into Tuesday. Until then, expect a beautiful — if chilly — fall weekend, perfect for leaf peeping, apple picking, and early Halloween decorating across northern Maine.
