Portland, Maine – A soaking rain and strong coastal winds are making for a raw Friday across Maine, with up to 1.5 inches of rainfall expected and gusts near 50 mph along the coast through late morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a northeasterly low is bringing two rounds of moderate to heavy rain across the state. The first band moved north early this morning, followed by a second system hitting the Downeast Coast around midday and reaching northern areas by late afternoon. Light snow may mix in above 2,500 feet, particularly in the Katahdin Highlands, where accumulation is possible.

High temperatures will struggle to reach the mid-40s statewide, with only low 50s near the southern coast. Cities like Bangor, Augusta, and Presque Isle will see steady showers, while higher totals are expected from Portland to Fryeburg and into the foothills. Rain will continue Saturday in the north, with scattered showers lingering into Sunday.

Drivers should avoid coastal roads during peak wind periods, and hikers are urged to use caution near Mount Katahdin. Wind advisories remain in effect along the coast until midday.

Rain eases by Sunday evening, with a drier and warmer pattern arriving early next week.
