CARIBOU, ME – Low clouds hang over the northern pines this early Tuesday, and the air feels thick, damp, and restless — a clear signal that the next few days in Aroostook County will lean wet and gray before a sharp, cold turn arrives late in the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, periods of rain will persist through Thursday as several weak disturbances ride along a stalled front across northern Maine. The heaviest rain is expected Wednesday, with steady showers and patchy fog reducing visibility along Route 1 and U.S. 95. Most areas can expect around a quarter inch of rainfall, with slightly higher totals toward the Canadian border. Winds from the southeast will gust near 20 mph at times, adding to the damp chill.

By Thursday evening, a drier and cooler air mass begins pushing in from Quebec, clearing skies and dropping temperatures into the 30s by early Friday. Patchy frost could form in open valleys from Presque Isle to Fort Fairfield — a sign that Caribou’s first brush with early-season cold may not be far off.

Drivers should expect wet roads through midweek and plan extra travel time, especially during foggy early hours. Once the front moves out, Friday and Saturday look bright and brisk — perfect for outdoor cleanup or late-fall foliage drives under clear northern skies.

To be fair, no snow is expected yet, but models hint at colder air pooling north of the border — and the first light flakes could appear in higher elevations before month’s end.
