Caribou, ME – Black ice formed on roadways across parts of Maine early this morning as temperatures dipped below 32°F. The St. John Valley and Piscataquis River Valley were particularly affected, with leftover moisture on untreated surfaces freezing over due to clearing skies and calm winds.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), black ice is difficult to see, especially on bridges and overpasses, making roads extremely slick and dangerous. Drivers in these regions should proceed with caution, particularly on untreated roads.
Black ice can be deceptive as it often blends in with the pavement, presenting an increased risk of accidents for unaware travelers. Local authorities are advising drivers to slow down, maintain a safe distance, and avoid sudden movements when navigating potentially icy areas.
Maine residents are encouraged to check road conditions and be mindful of the weather as additional freezing conditions may develop throughout the morning. Stay updated with the NWS for continued warnings and alerts.
