Maine – Snow begins to push into northern Maine later today, and within hours, roads across Aroostook County will turn slick as a powerful late-season winter storm ramps up.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Storm Warning takes effect at 8 p.m., with heavy snow, sleet, and ice expected through Friday afternoon. Snow totals are projected between 4 and 7 inches, with up to one inch of sleet and around 0.10 inches of ice accumulation.

In Caribou, Presque Isle, and along Route 1 and Route 161, conditions will deteriorate quickly after sunset. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, creating hazardous travel conditions for both evening and early morning commuters. Plan to avoid non-essential travel once precipitation begins.

By Friday morning, snowfall becomes heavier and mixes with sleet and freezing rain at times. Visibility will drop, and road crews may struggle to keep up during peak snowfall rates. Expect delays, closures, and difficult driving conditions across northern Maine.

Friday afternoon continues messy, with snow gradually mixing with rain before tapering. However, slushy buildup and lingering ice will keep roads hazardous well into the evening hours.

The weekend does not fully clear. Additional wintry mix chances return Saturday night into Sunday, followed by another round of snow or rain early next week.

Prepare now by charging devices, stocking essentials, and checking travel plans. This storm carries real impact despite the calendar turning to spring.
