Bangor, Maine – Drivers across eastern and northern Maine could face snow-covered roads beginning before sunrise Saturday as a widespread system drops up to 7 inches of snow across the region through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory begins as early as 2 a.m. Saturday for central and Downeast Maine, including Bangor, Brewer, Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Calais, and Machias. Snowfall totals between 4 and 7 inches are expected before tapering during the early afternoon.
Road conditions may deteriorate quickly along Interstate 95 near Bangor, U.S. Route 1 along the Downeast coast, and Route 9 toward Calais, especially during the Saturday morning travel period.
Farther north, a separate advisory begins around 6 a.m. Saturday and continues until 7 p.m. across Aroostook County and the North Woods, including Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Madawaska, and Houlton. Those areas are expected to see 3 to 5 inches of snowfall, which could create slippery driving conditions through much of the day.
Snowfall rates may occasionally reduce visibility, particularly in open areas where winds can blow snow across roadways.
Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra time to reach their destination. Current highway conditions across Maine are available anytime at newengland511.org.
Snow should gradually diminish from south to north later Saturday evening, though some slick roads may linger after sunset as temperatures fall.
