Portland, Maine – Snow-covered roads are slowing drivers across western and south central Maine and into northern New Hampshire as a steady band of light snow lingers through the early Saturday commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST Saturday for much of interior and coastal Maine, including Portland, Lewiston, Augusta and Rockland, as well as northern New Hampshire communities such as Berlin and North Conway. An additional inch of snow is possible before daybreak, bringing storm totals to 4 to 6 inches in many locations.
Primary routes including Interstate 95 near Augusta, Interstate 295 through Portland and U.S. Route 302 toward Fryeburg are snow-covered in spots. Secondary and untreated roads remain the most hazardous, especially in higher elevations across Oxford and Franklin counties and through the White Mountains. Even light snowfall is sticking quickly with temperatures below freezing.
Drivers should slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and check conditions at newengland511.org before heading out. Plow crews continue clearing major corridors, but slick patches may persist beyond sunrise.
Snow tapers around or shortly after 7 a.m., though icy stretches could linger into mid-morning. Additional advisories may be issued if lingering bands redevelop.
