Portland, Maine – Mainers should prepare for a return to more seasonable cold heading into late February, with a modest but notable uptick in rain and snow chances across the state.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, temperatures across Maine are expected to average near normal from Feb. 21 through Feb. 27, signaling a cooldown from recent milder swings. While no extreme Arctic outbreaks are projected, daytime highs and overnight lows are likely to settle closer to late-February averages statewide.

At the same time, precipitation probabilities are leaning above normal, with a 33% to 40% chance of wetter-than-average conditions. For Maine, that translates to periodic opportunities for both rain along the coast and snow inland, depending on surface temperatures and storm tracks.

In northern communities such as Caribou and Presque Isle, colder air in place could support accumulating snowfall if systems track through New England. Farther south, including Bangor and Portland, marginal temperatures may lead to mixed precipitation or cold rain at times, especially during daylight hours.

Drivers should remain alert for changing road conditions, particularly during early morning and overnight periods when surface temperatures dip below freezing. It’s a good time to check winter emergency kits and monitor local updates for any advisories.

This pattern favors active weather rather than prolonged dry stretches, and additional outlooks later this month could refine storm timing as the window approaches.
