Portland, Maine – Travel conditions across much of Maine and New Hampshire are expected to deteriorate quickly Tuesday night as accumulating snow spreads across the region, creating slick and hazardous roads through Wednesday afternoon. Even modest snowfall will coat untreated surfaces, raising concerns for the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon for large portions of western, central, and southern Maine, as well as central, northern, and southern New Hampshire. Snow totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected across much of Maine, with coastal and midcoast counties including Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, and Waldo counties closer to the 4 to 6 inch range. Parts of New Hampshire can expect 2 to 4 inches by early Wednesday.

Snow develops during the evening hours and continues overnight, with periods of moderate snowfall capable of briefly reducing visibility. Roads including I-95, I-295, Route 302, and portions of I-93 are likely to become snow-covered, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. Rural and higher-elevation routes in Oxford, Franklin, Somerset, and Coos counties are expected to see the most persistent impacts.

Transportation crews will be active, but drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check newengland511.org for real-time road conditions. Even lighter snow can lead to rapid slick spots on bridges and secondary roads.

Snow tapers gradually Wednesday afternoon, though lingering slick conditions may persist into the evening. Additional advisories could be issued if heavier snow bands develop.
