Caribou, ME – Snow will begin falling after midnight Wednesday across northern Maine, creating slick travel conditions by the early Thursday morning commute, especially along I-95 and Route 1.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the steadiest snowfall is expected between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. Thursday, with totals reaching 3 to 5 inches in areas like Fort Kent and Estcourt, and 2 to 4 inches around Caribou. Central areas including Millinocket and Houlton may see closer to 1 to 2 inches before a transition to rain or a rain-snow mix by midday.
Road conditions could deteriorate quickly before sunrise Thursday, particularly on untreated surfaces and secondary roads. As temperatures rise during the day, snow will mix with or change to rain from south to north, leading to slushy and wet conditions through the afternoon. A brief return to light snow remains possible Thursday night as colder air moves back in.
Drivers should allow extra travel time Thursday morning and remain alert for changing road conditions. Looking ahead, colder air settles in Friday into Saturday, with wind chills expected to drop below 0°F Friday night across much of northern Maine. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
