Caribou, Maine – Roads across northern Maine could turn slick quickly by Tuesday evening as a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain moves in just ahead of the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 11 a.m. Wednesday for much of northern and central Maine, including Aroostook, Piscataquis, Penobscot, and Somerset counties. Snow and sleet accumulations up to 2 inches are expected, along with ice buildup between one-tenth and one-quarter inch.
Communities including Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Millinocket, and Greenville will see the greatest impacts overnight into early Wednesday. Ice accumulation on untreated roads and elevated surfaces could make travel hazardous, especially along Routes 1, 11, and I-95 through the North Woods region.
The timing targets the Wednesday morning commute, when visibility may be reduced and roads remain slick. Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check conditions through Maine 511 before heading out.
Residents are urged to prepare for icy conditions by treating walkways and limiting non-essential travel during peak icing hours. Advisories remain in effect through late Wednesday morning, with updates possible as conditions evolve.
