Steadson, Maine – A fatal two-vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer and a dump truck shut down the intersection of Lapoint Road and Merrill Road in Steadson on Wednesday, leaving one man dead and another hospitalized with serious injuries.

According to the Maine State Police, troopers responded around 1:09 p.m. after a northbound tractor trailer on Lapoint Road allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign and struck an eastbound dump truck on Merrill Road. Authorities said the impact caused the fully loaded tractor trailer to strike a utility pole, which then snapped and landed on top of the vehicle. The dump truck, also fully loaded, overturned onto its passenger side.

Police said the tractor trailer driver, identified as 39-year-old Peter Omweno of Denton, Texas, was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the dump truck, 64-year-old Scott Webber of Glenburn, allegedly died while being transported to the hospital.

The intersection remained closed for several hours while State Police conducted an investigation and emergency crews worked to clear the scene. Assisting agencies included Levant Fire and Rescue, Hermon Fire and Rescue, Bouchard and Sons Towing, Central Maine Power Company, and Hopkins Milling and Paving.

According to authorities, the crash remains under investigation. No additional information on the cause or any pending charges was immediately released.
