West Gardiner, ME – Morning commuters on I-295 faced delays Sunday after a car crashed off the highway and into the Cobbesseecontee Stream, according to Maine State Police.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. on September 14, 2025, near the West Gardiner/Gardiner line. Police said a 2020 Audi sedan driven by 27-year-old Brandon Nale of Winslow veered off the southbound lanes after he allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel. The vehicle struck a guardrail, hit a concrete barrier, and launched into the stream.

According to troopers, a witness reported the car was fully submerged when first responders arrived. Trooper Tom Bureau entered the water in an effort to rescue the driver but later learned the man had already escaped. Nale was able to open a door, swim out of the vehicle, and reach a nearby residence for help.

Police confirmed Nale was transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta with non-life-threatening injuries. The Maine State Police Dive Team later assisted in recovering the submerged vehicle.

One lane of I-295 was closed for about an hour while emergency crews worked at the scene. Assisting agencies included West Gardiner Fire, Gardiner Fire & Rescue, Maine DOT, and AC Towing.
