Caribou, Maine – Maine residents should brace for sizzling temperatures and strong thunderstorms Tuesday as a cold front collides with humid air across Aroostook County. Heat indices near 100°F could make Caribou and surrounding towns feel sweltering by midday, with storms expected to begin after 11 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a band of isolated strong to severe thunderstorms may roll through Tuesday afternoon. Gusty winds up to 25 mph and localized downpours are likely. Motorists along U.S. Route 1 and Route 161 should expect reduced visibility and ponding on roads, especially near Presque Isle and Fort Kent.

Muggy air will dominate through the day, pushing actual temperatures into the upper 80s to low 90s, but it will feel much hotter. Residents should limit outdoor activity during peak heat and stay hydrated. Portable chargers and flashlights are advised in case of power outages triggered by storm winds or lightning.

This system marks the first major summer surge of heat and humidity for northern Maine, with more unstable weather expected later this week.
