Van Buren, ME – An 8-year-old girl died Wednesday afternoon after being struck by an ambulance on Main Street in Van Buren.

According to Maine State Police, the crash happened at approximately 4:01 p.m. when the child attempted to cross the roadway near Kennedy Terrace. Investigators said the ambulance, operated by the Van Buren Ambulance Service, was traveling north and not responding to an emergency call at the time. Speed is not believed to have been a factor.

Police said ambulance personnel immediately rendered aid to the girl, who lived nearby, but she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

The Van Buren Fire Department, Presque Isle Police Department, and Soderberg Construction assisted state police at the scene. Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash.
