Wilton, Maine – A 34-year-old Wilton man is recovering in the hospital following an officer-involved shooting Friday, after authorities say he allegedly threatened a landscaper with a gun on Cemetery Road.

According to a statement from Maine State Police, the incident began around 1:06 p.m. when Franklin County Regional Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that Gabriele Wilbur of Wilton was allegedly threatening to shoot a man performing landscaping at 58 Cemetery Road. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Wilton Police Department responded to the scene and attempted to negotiate with Mr. Wilbur, who police say allegedly refused commands and pointed a gun at officers.

Due to the escalating threat, authorities report that the Maine State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were called in. After a brief standoff, police allege that Mr. Wilbur confronted officers while armed, leading Maine State Police Trooper Andrew Hardy and Wilton Police Officer Cody Henry to allegedly discharge their weapons, striking Mr. Wilbur.

Law enforcement rendered aid until EMS arrived and transported Mr. Wilbur to Maine Medical Center, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to the Maine State Police, the Wilton Police Department and the State Police Major Crimes Unit are conducting a criminal investigation. Officials stated that Mr. Wilbur is expected to face several criminal charges. Both Trooper Hardy and Officer Henry have been placed on administrative leave, which authorities say is standard procedure following the use of deadly force. The Office of the Attorney General will investigate the law enforcement response.
