Augusta, Maine – Residents across Maine are being warned not to respond to a fraudulent letter demanding personal information, a scam that could put sensitive data at immediate risk if acted on.
According to Maine State Police, the scam targets registered individuals on probation, with letters falsely claiming to be from a “Maine Probation Tonduary.” The notice alleges a data breach in a records system and instructs recipients to email personal identifying information, including Social Security numbers, driver’s license copies, and other documents.
Officials stress the letter is not legitimate. Neither the Maine Sex Offender Registry nor the Department of Corrections will request sensitive information through unsolicited mail or email in this manner.
The scam letter creates urgency by stating records are “unverified” and must be updated within 14 days, a tactic commonly used to pressure victims into quick action.
Anyone who receives this letter should not respond or send any information. Instead, report it immediately to the Maine Sex Offender Registry at 207-624-7270 or contact local law enforcement.
Authorities warn additional scam attempts may continue and urge residents to stay alert for similar messages.
