Gray, Maine – Snowfall from an offshore storm is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across southern Maine and much of southern New Hampshire beginning late Sunday morning and lasting into Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. EST Monday for a broad region including south-central and southwest Maine and central and southern New Hampshire.
Forecasters expect widespread snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, with locally higher totals possible. Periods of snow are expected throughout Sunday and Sunday night, with accumulation continuing into Monday morning.
The advisory area includes major population centers and travel corridors such as Portland, South Portland, Lewiston, Auburn, Augusta, Waterville, Brunswick, Biddeford, Saco, Dover, Rochester, Portsmouth, Manchester, Nashua, and Keene, along with numerous surrounding towns.
The National Weather Service warns that travel will be impacted, particularly on untreated roads, as even light snowfall rates may quickly accumulate on pavement. Snow-covered roads are expected to create dangerous driving conditions, especially overnight and during the Monday morning commute.
While snowfall intensity may vary by location, visibility reductions and slick surfaces are likely during periods of steadier snow. Road conditions may deteriorate rapidly as temperatures remain cold enough to support accumulation.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time, especially during overnight and early Monday travel. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances.
Residents are encouraged to monitor road conditions through NewEngland511.org and stay alert for additional updates from the National Weather Service if snowfall amounts or timing change.
