Gray, Maine – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across large portions of Maine and northern New Hampshire until 1 p.m. EST Wednesday, as heavy snow continues to impact holiday travel, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.
The warning covers much of southern, western, and central Maine, including Portland, Augusta, Lewiston, Auburn, Brunswick, Bath, Camden, Rockland, Waterville, Skowhegan, Farmington, Rumford, and surrounding communities. In New Hampshire, the warning includes northern and southern Carroll County, including Conway, North Conway, Ossipee, Wolfeboro, and Crawford Notch.
Additional snowfall of 3 to 10 inches is expected overnight into Wednesday, bringing total storm accumulations to between 6 and 14 inches across the region. The National Weather Service warns that snowbands may develop, producing periods of locally intense snowfall and rapid accumulation.
According to forecasters, moderate to heavy snow combined with reduced visibility will create extremely hazardous travel conditions. Roads may become snow-covered quickly, making driving dangerous, especially during the Wednesday morning commute. Officials say the storm is likely to significantly impact holiday travel across interior and coastal Maine as well as northern New Hampshire.
The National Weather Service urges residents to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve. Those who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, and to allow extra time to reach destinations.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor the latest road conditions by visiting newengland511.org before traveling. Snowfall rates may fluctuate throughout the morning, but hazardous conditions are expected to persist until the warning expires early Wednesday afternoon.
