Northern New England – A messy winter storm is expected to bring a wintry mix and hazardous travel conditions across much of Maine and New Hampshire from Sunday night through Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. EST Monday for large portions of south central, southwest, west central, and western Maine, along with southern, central, and northern New Hampshire.

Forecasters expect mixed precipitation, including freezing rain, sleet, and snow, as the storm moves through. Snow accumulations are expected to remain light, up to 1 inch, but ice accumulations are forecast to range from one-quarter inch to as much as four-tenths of an inch in some areas. Sleet accumulations near one-quarter inch are also possible, particularly across interior sections.

The National Weather Service warns that freezing rain will be the primary hazard, creating icy road conditions, especially on untreated side roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces. Travel is expected to become difficult at times, with impacts likely during both the Monday morning and evening commutes.

While all winter precipitation types are possible, forecasters say the storm is expected to feature enough ice accumulation to pose a significant travel risk through Monday afternoon. Conditions may vary over short distances due to temperature differences across the region.

Residents are urged to slow down while traveling, allow extra time, and prepare for possible isolated power outages where ice accumulates on trees and power lines. Travelers should monitor updates as conditions evolve.
