Maine — The air feels sharp this morning, the kind that stings cheeks and quiets neighborhoods. Clear skies offer little warmth as February cold settles in, setting the stage for a harsher turn by the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, an arctic air mass moves into the region this weekend, bringing increasing potential for dangerous wind chills from Saturday evening through Sunday morning. While today remains quiet, conditions trend colder with each passing day.
Highs struggle near 30 across southern Maine and southern New Hampshire today, with single digits common at night inland. Portland and coastal York County stay cold but manageable for now. Farther south near Manchester, highs remain in the upper 20s to near 30 before colder air deepens.
By Friday night, snow chances increase. Light snow becomes likely late Friday into Saturday, especially across southern New Hampshire and southwest Maine. Accumulations stay light, but blowing snow and gusty winds reduce visibility at times. Roads may turn slick quickly, especially along I-95, Route 16, and secondary roads.
Saturday brings the bigger punch. Highs fall into the lower 20s, and wind chills drop into the single digits and below zero at times. It will feel bitter, especially during the morning and evening hours. Any snow showers linger, then taper as colder, drier air takes over.
Saturday night turns dangerously cold. Lows dip below zero inland, with wind chills pushing colder. Limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and protect pets and exposed pipes.
Looking ahead, early next week stays cold but calmer. The 6–10 day outlook hints at a gradual warming trend later next week, with temperatures trending above normal for mid-February.
