Maine – Flakes swirl across Maine this morning as a major Winter Storm Warning grips the region. Roads from Fryeburg to Lewiston and across southern New Hampshire are already slick as heavy, wet snow covers highways and driveways alike. By midday, plows will be battling steady snowfall and dropping temperatures as the storm intensifies.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, the warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday, with total snow accumulations between 6 and 9 inches expected across southern, western, and central Maine — and extending into southern New Hampshire. The heaviest bands are expected through the afternoon and evening, with visibility dropping below a quarter mile during peak bursts.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Roads like I-95, Route 202, and Route 302 could see rapid deterioration, particularly during the evening commute. Gusty north winds will combine with falling snow to create drifting and low visibility, especially across open stretches and elevated terrain.
Temperatures hover in the upper 20s to near freezing through tonight, turning any slush into black ice by dawn Wednesday. As the storm exits, bitterly cold air sweeps in — highs near 37°F Wednesday drop to the single digits by Friday morning.
The weekend brings sun and calmer conditions, but the cold lingers — a sharp reminder that December’s winter pattern has fully arrived.
Bundle up, drive cautiously, and check in on neighbors as the season’s first major snow event unfolds.
