Maine’s northern tier is bracing for a sharp late-winter swing as gusty winds and a rain-to-snow changeover unfold in Caribou today.
Temperatures sit near 20 degrees at Caribou Municipal Airport under overcast skies. According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, highs climb to 39 degrees this afternoon with a chance of rain and snow between 3 and 4 p.m., then mainly rain. Southwest winds increase to 17 to 22 mph, with gusts up to 37 mph. That breeze will make it feel colder along Route 1 and open stretches north of Presque Isle.
Colder air pushes back in tonight. A wintry mix develops before 7 p.m., then snow becomes possible before midnight. Lows fall to 6 degrees with wind chills near -3. Even light moisture could refreeze quickly as temperatures drop.
Sunday turns sharply colder as March begins. Highs reach only 14 degrees with a slight chance of snow showers. Sunday night plunges to -8 under mostly clear skies. Any slush from today may harden solid, increasing the risk of flash freezing on untreated roads.
Monday stays sunny but frigid with a high near 13. Monday night dips to -2. A rebound begins Tuesday with highs near 30 and snow likely Tuesday night. Highs recover into the mid-30s by Wednesday.
While record warmth builds across the Southwest, Arctic air dominates northern Maine. Longer-range outlooks hint at gradual moderation into early March, but winter still holds firm here.
Daylight Saving Time begins March 8 at 2 a.m.
