Caribou, Maine – Wet snow on Mount Katahdin and persistent rain across northern Maine will keep roads slick and visibility low through Sunday morning, complicating Memorial Day weekend travel and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, rain showers will continue Saturday and into Sunday as a low-pressure system moves eastward. High temperatures will barely reach the mid-40s across much of the region, with colder pockets near Allagash, Clayton Lake, and Greenville staying in the upper 30s. Katahdin is expected to see some wet snow accumulation, especially at higher elevations.

Fog may form during early morning hours, particularly in valleys and low-lying areas from Houlton to Bangor. Drivers should expect reduced visibility and slippery conditions, especially on Routes 11 and 95. Light rain will linger into Sunday before the system moves offshore, giving way to a drier and warmer pattern next week.

In addition, lake and river temperatures remain dangerously cold—between 45°F and 52°F. The National Weather Service warns of cold water immersion risks: even brief exposure can lead to physical incapacitation. Boaters and swimmers are urged to wear life jackets and use extreme caution.

Rain and chilly air will ease by Monday, but additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen overnight.
