Albion, ME – A tragic crash in Albion left one child dead and two others injured Friday evening after a motorist allegedly struck a group of pedestrians and fled the scene.

According to the Maine State Police, troopers responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash around 5:12 p.m. Friday on Hussey Hill Road. Authorities said the incident involved one adult and two minor children, all reportedly struck by a white 2016 Hyundai Veloster, which immediately left the area.

The adult victim, identified as 33-year-old Mollie Egold of Albion, was airlifted to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Police said one of the children was also airlifted and remains in critical condition. The second minor was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to officials.

Troopers allegedly located the suspect vehicle and operator a short time later. According to police, 44-year-old Benjamin Lancaster of Albion was taken into custody and transported to Kennebec County Jail. Lancaster faces charges including Operating Under the Influence Causing Death, Operating Under the Influence Causing Serious Bodily Injury (two counts), Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Serious Bodily Injury (two counts).
