Veazie, Maine – A man remains in critical condition after being struck while trying to help a driver on I-95 Monday night, highlighting dangerous road conditions during evening snowfall.

According to Maine State Police, the crash happened around 7:02 p.m. Monday on Interstate 95 northbound near mile marker 189 in Veazie. An 18-year-old driver from Bangor lost control of her Kia Sorento on snow-covered pavement, coming to rest in the median before exiting the vehicle.

Investigators say a 54-year-old man from Medford stopped to help and stood behind a guardrail with his wife when a second vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old from Old Town, lost control and struck them. Authorities believe the man may have attempted to shield the younger driver at the moment of impact.

Both pedestrians were thrown down an embankment. The 18-year-old sustained minor injuries, while the 54-year-old was critically hurt and transported to a local hospital. The second driver also suffered minor injuries.

State police say speed does not appear to be a factor, but slick road conditions played a key role. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain in their vehicles after crashes when possible. The investigation remains ongoing.
