Caribou, ME – A significant winter storm is set to hit northern Maine on Thursday, bringing up to 13 inches of snow and dangerous travel conditions. Wind gusts up to 46 mph could create whiteout conditions, making morning and evening commutes hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 5 a.m. to midnight Thursday for Northeast Aroostook, Northwest Aroostook, Northern Piscataquis, and Northern Somerset counties. Snowfall will be heaviest Thursday morning, tapering off late in the evening.

Friday will bring areas of blowing snow, with wind chills plunging into the negative teens. Roads could remain slick, and visibility will be reduced. Another storm system is expected Sunday, potentially bringing additional snowfall into early next week.

Residents should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for power outages. If driving is unavoidable, keep a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle. For real-time road conditions, visit newengland511.org.

With Valentine’s Day on Friday, travelers should plan ahead, as road conditions may remain difficult throughout the weekend.
