Caribou, ME – Residents across Maine are preparing for a significant wind event as high wind warnings have been issued for much of the state from Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the strongest winds are expected to impact areas including Northeast Aroostook, Northern Penobscot, and surrounding counties. South winds of 25-35 mph, with gusts reaching 60 mph, are forecast to begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday and continue until 6 a.m. Thursday.

Similar conditions are predicted for Southern Piscataquis, Central Penobscot, and Northern Washington counties, with gusts up to 60 mph expected during the same timeframe. Coastal areas, including Knox, Lincoln, and Coastal Cumberland counties, may also experience gusts reaching 55 mph earlier, starting as soon as 6 p.m.

The weather service warns that these winds could topple trees and power lines, leading to widespread outages and hazardous travel conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles. Residents are urged to remain indoors, away from windows, and exercise caution if travel is unavoidable.

Significant power outages are anticipated, and the public is advised to secure outdoor decorations and other loose items.
