Caribou, Maine – A major winter storm is forecast to bring accumulating snow and gusty winds to southern and eastern Maine on Monday, with blizzard conditions possible along the Downeast coast, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou.
Forecasters say snow will spread into the Downeast region mid to late Monday morning, becoming heavy during the afternoon as winds increase. Eastern portions of northern Maine are expected to see snow develop by early Monday evening. Snow and wind are forecast to continue through Monday evening, with the heaviest accumulations expected across Downeast and coastal Hancock and Washington counties.
The National Weather Service graphic indicates a high probability of at least 4 inches of snowfall across much of eastern Maine, including areas near Bangor, Bar Harbor, Machias and Calais. Portions of coastal Washington County show the highest chances of heavier totals. Northern interior communities are expected to receive lighter to moderate snowfall.
Wind gusts may reach levels strong enough to reduce visibility along exposed roadways, including stretches of Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1 and Route 9. Blizzard conditions are possible along the Downeast coast Monday afternoon into Monday evening if visibility drops below a quarter mile in blowing snow.
Travel impacts are likely during the Monday afternoon and evening commute, particularly for students, young drivers and workers returning home.
Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions before traveling.
