Gray, Maine – Dangerous cold temperatures and well below zero wind chills are expected across Maine this weekend as Arctic air moves into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, sub-zero wind chill temperatures are possible Friday night through Saturday, with below-zero air temperatures potentially lasting into Sunday morning. Officials warn the cold could pose a serious risk to anyone outdoors for extended periods.

Forecast graphics show wind chill values dropping as low as -30 degrees in parts of the state Saturday morning. Minimum air temperatures early Sunday are expected to fall below zero in several locations, including interior and northern areas.

The National Weather Service notes that these conditions may be dangerously cold, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Residents are urged to plan ahead if traveling, particularly in remote or rural areas, where exposure risks can escalate quickly.

Officials recommend preparing homes now, including protecting exposed pipes from freezing and ensuring heating systems are functioning properly. Drivers are also encouraged to carry winter survival supplies if traveling during the coldest periods.

The cold snap follows a stretch of active winter weather and may represent some of the coldest temperatures of the season for the region.

The National Weather Service advises residents to continue monitoring forecasts and safety updates as the weekend approaches.
