Lewiston, ME — A strong winter storm is forecast to impact central and western Maine and much of New Hampshire beginning Friday night, bringing a dangerous mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 9 p.m. Friday through 8 p.m. Saturday. Forecast models indicate over 6 inches of snow are possible, along with up to a half-inch of sleet and one-quarter inch of ice across portions of interior York, Oxford, Cumberland, and Franklin counties in Maine, and Grafton, Carroll, Coos, and Merrimack counties in New Hampshire.
Travel could become hazardous, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. In mountainous areas, heavy snowfall and low visibility may lead to dangerous driving conditions. Central regions could experience significant ice accretion, increasing the risk of power outages.
The storm’s path may fluctuate, causing transitions between snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Areas just south of the mountains are expected to see prolonged freezing rain, worsening road conditions.
Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts and prepare emergency kits with food, flashlights, and warm clothing. Drivers should delay travel where possible and stay informed via local emergency management updates.
